LEADERSHIP COACHING

For individuals and groups

Coaching is about action - getting to a better place than where you started, moving towards how you would like to be.

Before and after coaching

We guarantee it. If you're not in a better place inside yourself than when you started coaching with People Intelligence, you'll get your money back.

Coaching for leaders

As a leader, you are a big presence in your organisation. People look to you to make a difference, and, for something that will make a difference to them - it might be a boost of inspiration, a smile of approval, straight talking and know-how or confidence and trust. Whatever it is they're looking for in you, you can bet it's linked to their self-belief, which means your response will boost their self-belief or dent it. When people are so different, how do you read them and deliver what's right, in that situation, or that moment, to spur them on, to feel good, to perform well?

And how do you do that for yourself? How do you top up your self-belief when you're fed up with 'pain in the neck' personalities, or your good ideas are getting lost in translation, or you're worn down by people's lack of initiative?

This is where People Intelligence coaching can make all the difference. I specialise in the people side of leadership - finding what's great in you so that you can bring out what's great in your people; surfacing what you find tough so that you can develop resilience there and deliver what's needed.

I can make a profound difference to your relationships at work, starting with you:

You as the person behing the job

The challenges you face and how you tackle them are different to the next person. Look at these models and imagine all the different profiles and permutations you would find in one group of people.

Overview:

Me & You

Zooming in:

Attitude & Facets

Coaching is unique to you. You just don't find development like this in training courses. When I coach you, I see you through the above emotional intelligence (EI) model. As a result, you leave with crucial self awareness insights AND practical ways to change your behaviour - the all-important how to.

Here's what my coaching dialogues do:

My EI Coaching

Through my coaching, you become much more aware of your EI and other people's, you'll know where you are strong, and where you have room to develop. I work out with you how to put this into practice and enable you to develop the facets that are important to you for your situation.

It takes courage

Maureen Bowes Maureen Bowes
Leadership Coach and Facilitator

The coaching I offer is not a soft option. In working with you, I show you how your thoughts, feelings and attitudes have a decisive influence on how you come across to others. It takes courage to discover vulnerabilities and areas for development. And it takes courage to do something about them. I offer you a range of personal and interpersonal development practices that you can apply to your professional life, so you can minimise whatever hinders your progress and become more assured around insecurities - yours and other people's.

Best use of time

Feel Good, Perform Well

As a leader you may feel that you haven't the time for self reflection. Maybe you think it's an indulgence or just navel gazing. My experience of working with leaders is that managed reflection time (a synonym for coaching) has been one of their best investments.
Rewards include time saved through more productive and cohesive teamwork, increased resilience, returning enthusiasm, renewed sense of purpose, relief, and a capacity to reflect and self-right when things get tough. This means you can be true to yourself, get the best from your people and love what you do.

If people feel good about themselves, they perform well. Your interactions, as a leader, impact on how your people feel about themselves much more than you know. How you are with them directly affects their performance, and that affects the bottom line.

COACHING FOR INDIVIDUALS

One to one coaching takes place in Hampshire and surrounds, or, online anywhere in the world using skype and a webcam.

Here are three options for one to one coaching with me:

Situational EI

Choose this if you are feeling stuck or blinkered and can't find a way forward or the momentum to change.

Bring a specific situation, issue or challenge to explore your EI practice; leave with solutions, awareness, clarity and a sense of relief as you free yourself up to take action or change.

  • 90 minute sessions - minimum 3 (Behaviour change needs sustaining. A one-off session isn't enough to replace old habits with new. 3 sessions are usually enough to ensure your behaviour matches your intention into the future.)
  • £120 per session plus VAT

Attitudinal development - a chance to change

Choose this if people don't seem on your wavelength , if you're not making the progress you want or if you're feeling resistant to change.

Cultural fit is dependent on people having the 'right' attitude. What is the right attitude for you? For your organisation? And how do you develop it?

Your attitude is fundamental to who you are. It starts with how you view yourself and how you compare yourself to other people. It colours your outlook on the world. Changing attitude takes commitment to action, receptivity to feedback and regular reflection.

  • 2 hour sessions (minimum 5)
  • Confidential learning log & reflective journal
  • Online contact between sessions
  • £200 per session plus VAT
  • (360° feedback option available)

The future you at work

Choose this if you want to get real or get unstuck.

How do you view 'good enough' at work? For example, in your role, with your people, and in your relationship with yourself? Your ambition, self-belief and stress levels are all influenced by your perceptions of 'good enough', and these perceptions are often distorted.

This coaching programme explores the patterns you have repeated in your life, through writing and reflecting on your 'life story' and your life script (the messages you give yourself). The goal is to bring yourself up to date with who you are now, your true potential and to create the script you choose for your future.

  • 2 hour sessions (minimum 5)
  • In between sessions - personal biography work and Life Script project
  • £200 per session plus VAT

Am I the right coach for you?

Do you want to develop in your job or in yourself?

A professional mentor, who has, or has had, a similar role to you will be able to work with you on the job you do. The best mentors are often the ones who are just a few years on from where you are now, as times haven't changed so much and s/he still has strong empathy from recent experience.

My coaching is about personal development on the inside and in your relationships with others as a leader, i.e. not in the specific job you do.

Internal to your organisation or external?

People Intelligence is independent and works with a variety of organisations and people. This independence usually means my coaching clients open up to be more honest about themselves, free of concerns that the coach may represent the organisation or be judging them. Working with other organisations also helps to cross pollinate ideas, particularly between private and public sectors. My niche is coaching head teachers and leaders in education. Over the past 2 years I have successfully coached over 70 head teachers. You can see what they say below.

Coaching experience?

Check out how long the coach has actually been coaching and ideally other people's recommendations of her/his coaching before committing. Sometimes people think they can add coaching and facilitation to their cv because of the seniority of their position (the implication being to get where they are, they must be able to do these things). Not so. Ask for coaching references.

Here's my experience:

I have worked independently coaching senior leaders, and senior leadership teams, for over 10 years in personal development and managing people.

I have worked as senior tutor on the Applied Emotional Intelligence Masters Degree programme via the University of Middlesex, and, at the University of Portsmouth on the NVQ4 Public Sector Management programme. I have both underpinning theory coupled with extensive practice.

People who behave with high emotional intelligence (EI) inspire me and so:

  • I became accredited in the emotional intelligence diagnostics Individual Effectiveness and Team Effectiveness through JCA Occupational Psychologists in 2003.
  • I qualified in the post graduate certificate in Applied Emotional Intelligence and became a certified AppliedEI™ practitioner in 2004.
  • I attended a 5 day programme on The Human Element in 2005.
  • I was one of the first people to be accredited in the Individual Potential Accelerator in 2010.
  • I keep aligned to the UK thought leaders in emotional intelligence.

What others say about my coaching

“I used to think ‘Coaching - I don’t need that!’ Now I see it in my diary and think ‘Wahooo!’ It’s totally changed my perspective.” Jacqui Persson, Head teacher, Tiptoe Primary, Lymington

“In the time that I have been working with People Intelligence I have expanded both my personal and my school's horizons beyond what I could ever have believed was possible.” Clare Molyneux, Head teacher, Ropley Primary

“As leaders, we welcome new perspectives and approaches. After my coaching sessions, I began to wonder how I had ever got this far in my career without it!” Nicky Cunningham, Head teacher, Heathfield Special School

“Coaching has given me light bulb moments of self awareness combined with reflection time.  Both have  impacted positively on my confidence through overcoming limiting beliefs and  enabled me to lead with more emotional intelligence. I can’t speak highly enough of the positive impact coaching has on my professional life.” Paul Davies, Head teacher, Grayshott Primary

“One of the most beneficial aspects of the coaching with People Intelligence is the way it has developed and grown my capacity for really sharp reflection. I have heard Steve Munby of the National College refer to the importance of school leaders getting off the dance floor and up onto the balcony. We really cannot have too much of this as the day-to-day and the urgent can so quickly take precedence over strategic thinking and planning not to mention our own professional growth. We need the space to think, but when time and money are at a premium such opportunities for reflection must have a tangible impact on the work we do in our schools - highly focused  and skilfully structured coaching can ensure this. The process of coaching for me has also been about building capacity. I know now that I evaluate what I do and how I do it much more effectively. In effect coaching has also been about having licence to get even better at what I do well, rather than allowing myself to be sidetracked by my shortcomings. And that’s liberating.” Beverley Stevens, Head teacher, Court Moor Comprehensive School

COACHING FOR GROUPS

While the one to one coaching experience is valuable, it is a dialogue between two people; the coach isn't always able to see the coaching client interacting with others at work. Group coaching enables participants to put their development points into practice, to receive feedback from others and to take risks within a highly supportive and trusting group, with the coach / facilitator present, before applying it directly back at work.

I offer three, very different, group coaching programmes:

Transformational Coaching for Leaders

Coaching practices for inspiring change - to transform you, your people, your teams, your organisation.

Sunflower

If you want to introduce coaching to your organisation, you have to believe in it and therefore know what it can do from your own experience. This programme really delivers on the experience bit.

It's the cherry on the cake for me because it transforms leaders into reflective practitioners. You go from being coached, to coaching others, to knowing the real business case for coaching and how to embed a coaching approach in the culture of your organisation.

Participants need to have previous coaching experience (i.e. to have been coached).

The programme is offered at 3 levels. Each level is 3 x 1 day over a period of 3 - 4 months.

  • Level 1 - Personal development to succeed in a coaching approach with your people.
  • Level 2 - Developing the right attitude in yourself and with your people for organisational change, future progress and full potential.
  • Level 3 - Evolve organisational change and make performance management meaningful for head, heart and soul.

What participants say:

  • You realise you can change and you practise how to.
  • The bonus is that everyone I work with has benefitted from me doing something for me.
  • No one tells you how you come across so it's valuable to see yourself through other people's eyes.
  • It enables you to take whatever niggles you, blow it open and deal with it.
  • It gives you strategies to become more aware, resources to lift yourself and tools for regular use.

Group programmes are bespoke and so are arranged on demand and to meet the participants' requirements.

Accreditation for ILM Level 5 (Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring) or ILM Diploma for Professional Management for Coaches and Mentors, or ILM Level 7 (Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring) available through this programme.

Finding Your Element

Making a living or making a life?

How do you inspire others?

“Anyone that can use their soul or their life or their intelligence and bring it to someone and that person gets better, that's a good deed. But it's not something that happens every day.” Ornette Coleman, Jazz musician

If you've lost some of the spark you once had about your work, it will impact on your leadership. Finding Your Element is about personal renewal. Based on the latest thinking and practice (e.g from Sir Ken Robinson , Neil Crofts and Michael Bungay-Stanier ) on creativity, authentic leadership and doing great work, it brings you reflective and creative explorations to energise, enthuse and generate ideas for inspired leadership.

3 x 1 day programme

(with every possibility of becoming a self managed learning group)

You will create a personal treasure chest of:

  • Peak moments from your life
  • Your unique purpose
  • What brings you personal fulfilment
  • What you need to bring out your best
  • Your role models - who inspires your behaviour and action?
  • Your circles of influence - who recognises your potential?
  • Your vision
  • and much more.

What participants say:

  • Created a new set of goals closely aligned to who I am.
  • Provided time, space and tools (plus facilitation) to reflect deeply on why I am doing what I am doing, realising and reaffirming my passion / purpose.
  • It put me back in touch with the 'why'.
  • Networking and sharing thought processes with other leaders was very useful and helped me to shape my own ideas.
  • I feel more motivated and aspirational than I have in a long time.

Group programmes are bespoke and so are arranged on demand and to meet the participants' requirements.
